Here's my story. I've had at least one running VW since I was 16. My first car was a 57 Oval. I paid $150.00 for it. $50.00 was a finders fee to the guy that told me about it. It ran and drove good. This would have been 1974. I drove it for a year or two, then I hit a car that ran a stop sign. My Dad has always been a dickhead, so he made me junk it.
Fast forward to about 1987, and a lot of other VW's since then, I see an add for a European 58 Rag.
(yes I kept the ad) I buy it. I think I paid $1500.00 for it, and not having anyplace to put it, I take it to my Dads house, big mistake. He starts taking parts off of the car. When I see what he's done, I'm pissed, and take the car back. He says he can't find the parts he's removed. Now I'm really pissed. I park the car and never drive it. He removed the stock wheels, the running boards, the hood crest and emblem, the speedo cable tube, the steering wheel, the sun visors, the breast plate off the motor, and the side marker lights. The semaphores had been removed and replaced with the accessory blinkers, that's what he removed. The semaphores where in the glove box, but he lost them too. Heres a picture of what it looked like when I got it back.
As you can see buy the date on the picture It's only a few months old, but this is how the car has sat since 1987.
I moved to Missouri about 10 years ago and brought it with me. I would start it up every once and awhile, but about 5 years ago, the gas went bad and screwed up the motor. Well that really pissed me off, so I put it in the barn and forgot about it.
In 2008 I pulled it out of the barn and put it back into my shop.
I started working on it at the end of last year. I pulled the original number matching 36 horse yesterday, and it's not screwed up, just a stuck valve. Thats an easy fix. I have a Judson that I'm going to put on it too.
I have replaced all the parts that he lost. The steering wheel is the original one from the car, along with a few of the other parts. I found them under the seats.
I might put a 40 horse in it to get it drivable.
So here's the pictures as it sits now.
Notice there's no valve stems on the wheels.
