Started installing my rebuilt Judson today. What a pain in the ASS! The belts I crossed referenced from the original number are to short. The choke cable is to short, now I have to get this low bastard up in the air and try to find some more cable. I had to build a fuel line. And the wiring harness in the engine compartment comes out through the tar board right about where the oiler needs to be mounted. This is a really good way to make a simple 36 horse engine unsimple. I hope it's worth it. Dean

Wow, that sucks that the install is giving you hell. You would think that everything would sorta line up since it was an an aftermarket accessory for VW.

Yes you would think. I exchanged the belts today for the next size up, but didn't go to the shop to try them. I didn't want to bend my original fuel line, so I used another one I had. I straightened it out and bent it the way I wanted it. Not sure what to do with the choke cable. I had to drill new holes in the fan shroud for the new location of the choke cable. I know the hole I drilled on the carb side of the shroud is in the right spot, but not sure about the other hole. The throttle linkage will take a little adjusting, but it will work. I hate to drill holes in the tar board and firewall for the oiler, but that's what you have to do. My hours at work have been cut to 3 days, so I'll have 4 more days to get it figured out. I probably won't work on it again until Thursday. It's been stupid HOT here, and the flies are bad. I live in the country, so lots of bugs to deal with, and not the VW kind. That makes it worse than it really is. Dean

Well the Judson is on and running. It hit the deck lid, so that took some work. Some of the parts are repops, but most of it's original Judson stuff. The choke cable is still to short, and I can't make it any longer, so I think I'll rebuild the 62 carb that I have with the electric choke. I'll just coil up the choke cable above the tranny. I didn't drive it yet, but hope to over the weekend. It's noisy, but the installation instructions from the Judson registry say it will make noise for about 30 or 40 miles, but then should quiet down. Not sure if the belts should be a little longer or not. I can move them about 1/2 an inch. Pictures and maybe a video this weekend..

Ok, going over the install instructions, I missed the part that said I need to put an extension on the choke cable. I can do that. I need to make sure the Judson air cleaner will clear the electric choke on my other carb if I decide to switch to that one. Not sure what to do, an electric choke would be nice though.

So I finally get this thing running pretty good, and now the generator light is on. It wasn't on when I parked it Saturday, but was on when I backed it out Sunday. I haven't checked it out yet, maybe tomorrow.

Looks great! How big of a difference in power have you noticed now with the Judson on it compared to a stock 36?

I really didn't get much seat time with it without the Judson. It's been 25 years since I've driven a stock 36 horse any distance. I drove this one up my road about 4 times before the Judson install, maybe a total of 2 miles. I can feel a difference with the Judson, but I expected more. I might change the distributor and see if that makes a difference. I really haven't driven it very far, but it will cruise at 60 to 65 pretty easily. It is noisy though. The Judson adds 50% of the horse power, so that's still only 54 hp on a good day.

Here's my own 36hp with a Judson supercharger installed. I've added a Fram bypass oil filter with steel-braided oil hoses, spiral copper oil cooler and fittings (that I produce now!). I've also added an early Marvel Mystery oiler bottle with a steel-braided oil hose to the Judson intake (that I also produce). I've recently added an Okrasa-style glass-bowl fuel filter with copper-coated steel lines with soldered banjo fittings (that I also produce now!) email me for details if you're interested.....
